Learning is easier to own when students can see the path ahead. At PEAK Mastery, Mastery Maps organize important knowledge and skills into clear learning progressions, while student-friendly “I Can” statements help students understand what they are working toward.
Together, these tools make learning more visible, helping students, educators, and families understand what has been learned, what is currently developing, and what comes next.
A Mastery Map is a visual learning pathway that organizes competencies into meaningful progressions. It helps students see how knowledge and skills build over time and where individual competencies fit within a larger learning journey.
Rather than learning feeling like a series of disconnected assignments, students can see how today’s learning connects to what they have already developed and what they will be ready to tackle next.
Mastery Maps help students see:
WHERE I’VE BEEN
Skills and competencies already demonstrated.
WHERE I AM
Competencies currently being developed.
WHAT’S NEXT
Skills students are becoming ready to pursue.
WHERE IT CAN LEAD
More complex application, deeper learning, and new challenges.
Academic standards can be complex. “I Can” statements translate learning expectations into clear, student-friendly language so students understand what they are expected to know or be able to do.
Examples of “I Can” statements:.
MATHEMATICS
“I can compare fractions with different denominators and explain my reasoning.”
READING
“I can make an inference and support it with evidence from the text.”
WRITING
“I can organize my ideas and use evidence to support my explanation.”
SCIENCE
“I can use evidence from an investigation to explain a pattern.”
When students understand the target, they can become active participants in reaching it.
At PEAK Mastery, personalized learning does not mean students follow disconnected or arbitrary academic expectations. Our learning is grounded in the Utah Core Standards, which define the knowledge and skills students are expected to develop at each grade level.
Mastery Maps help turn those standards into clear, connected learning progressions. Individual competencies identify the knowledge and skills students are working to develop, while student-friendly “I Can” statements make those expectations easier for students to understand and take ownership of.
The result is a learning system that maintains high academic expectations while making the path toward those expectations more visible.
A student’s Mastery Map is not a single level or score. Students develop many competencies at the same time and may be at different stages of understanding across different skills and subjects.
A student can move forward in one area while continuing to strengthen another. The map helps make a more complete learning picture visible.
A competency isn’t considered mastered simply because a student completed an assignment or spent enough time on it. Students provide evidence that they understand the learning and can use it appropriately.
Examples of evidence may include:
ASSESSMENTS • PROJECTS • WRITING • DISCUSSIONS • PRESENTATIONS • APPLICATION • OBSERVATION
The type of evidence may vary depending on what students are being asked to know or do. The important question is the same: Can the student demonstrate meaningful understanding?
Mastery Maps help PEAK Mastery respond to individual learning needs without disconnecting students from their grade-level learning community.
Students continue to engage with grade-level standards, experiences, projects, peers, and broader learning opportunities while receiving additional support or greater challenge in specific competencies when needed.
What can I do now?
What am I still developing?
What evidence shows my growth?
Where do I need help?
What am I ready to work toward next?
Over time, students learn to use their Mastery Maps and learning evidence alongside educators and families to reflect on growth, set goals, and take increasing ownership of their learning.
Imagine a student whose Mastery Map shows that she has demonstrated mastery of several reading competencies, is currently developing her ability to make inferences and support them with text evidence, and is ready to begin comparing ideas across multiple texts.
Her “I Can” statements make those learning targets understandable. Her educator can use the map to help plan instruction and practice, while the student can see what she is working toward.
As she reads, writes, discusses, and applies those skills in different learning experiences, she gathers evidence of understanding. When she demonstrates mastery of a competency, her map reflects that growth and helps identify what comes next.
STUDENTS
Understand their goals, recognize progress, ask for support, and take increasing ownership.
EDUCATORS & COACHES
Monitor growth, identify learning needs, provide feedback, and help determine appropriate next steps.
FAMILIES
Gain greater visibility into what their child is learning, where they are growing, and where support or challenge may be needed.
Instead of a single grade telling the whole story, families can see a richer picture of what a student knows, what they are developing, and where they are headed next.
Mastery-Based Learning
Expeditionary Learning
Coaching Relationships
Mastery Maps make the learning journey visible. “I Can” statements make each step understandable. Together, they help students recognize their growth, understand their goals, and take increasing ownership of what comes next.
