Independent Study

Independent Study gives students dedicated time to work toward individual learning goals, strengthen skills, pursue meaningful work, and take increasing ownership of their learning.

Students are not simply given work to complete on their own. Educators remain nearby to coach, confer, provide targeted support, and help students determine meaningful next steps.

What Independent Study Means for Students

Students work toward goals based on their current learning needs, interests, and next steps.

PURPOSEFUL PRACTICE
Students strengthen skills through meaningful practice, application, revision, and deeper exploration.

TARGETED SUPPORT
Educators use this time to confer with students and provide additional instruction, intervention, feedback, or extension when needed.

GROWING INDEPENDENCE
Students gradually develop the skills to plan, prioritize, manage their time, monitor progress, and take ownership of their learning.

Students develop independence, confidence, and essential life skills when they take an active role in their learning. Independent Study helps students apply what they know, explore their interests more deeply, and build the habits they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Building Skills for Independent Learning

Students are not expected to arrive at PEAK Mastery already knowing how to manage their own learning. Educators intentionally teach, model, and support the habits students need to become increasingly independent.

PLAN
Set goals and identify priorities.

ORGANIZE
Manage materials, tasks, and resources.

BEGIN
Develop the ability to get started without unnecessary delay.

PERSIST
Work through challenge and seek help when needed.

MONITOR
Notice progress and determine whether strategies are working.

REFLECT & ADJUST
Learn from experience and make thoughtful next-step decisions.

Support gradually shifts as students grow. Younger learners and students developing these skills receive more structure, modeling, check-ins, and guidance. As students demonstrate readiness, they gain greater responsibility, choice, and independence.

How Independent Study Connects to the PEAK Mastery Model

Independent Study brings all three PEAK Mastery pillars together by giving students dedicated time to practice skills, pursue goals, receive support, and take increasing ownership of their learning.

MASTERY-BASED LEARNING

Practice, progress, and grow toward mastery.

Students use Mastery Maps, learning goals, feedback, and evidence of learning to identify what they need to work on next. Time can be used for targeted practice, revision, deeper application, intervention, or extension based on individual progress.

EXPEDITIONARY LEARNING

Extend learning through exploration and application.

Independent Study gives students time to research questions, develop projects, prepare for fieldwork, explore interests, revise authentic work, and make connections between academic skills and meaningful learning experiences.

COACHING RELATIONSHIPS

Build independence with support nearby.

Educators confer with students, help them set priorities and goals, provide feedback and targeted support, and encourage reflection. As students become more capable, support is gradually released so they can take greater ownership of their learning.

From Supported Learners to Self-Directed Learners

Independent Study is designed to grow with students. What begins with significant structure, guidance, and educator support can gradually become greater independence, responsibility, and ownership.

The goal is not simply for students to complete work on their own. It is for them to develop the skills and confidence to understand what they need, make a plan, seek resources and support, persist through challenges, and continue learning throughout their lives.
