Reading, writing, and math are foundational to nearly everything students will learn and do. At PEAK Mastery, Foundations provides focused instruction and practice designed to help students build these essential skills with understanding, confidence, and a strong foundation for what comes next.
Rather than assuming every student needs the same instruction at the same time, Foundations helps us meet students where they are, identify what they are ready to develop next, and provide the right balance of instruction, practice, support, and challenge.
Foundations are focused learning blocks dedicated primarily to developing essential math and literacy competencies.
Students work toward clearly defined competencies that build upon one another over time. Because students may be at different points in their learning, Foundations instruction is responsive to what each student currently understands and what they are ready to work toward next.
A student may need additional instruction or practice with one competency while being ready for greater challenge in another. Instead of treating a student as simply “ahead” or “behind,” educators look more closely at the individual skills the student is developing.
The goal is not to move students through material as quickly as possible. It is to help them develop the deep understanding and essential skills they need to keep growing.
During Foundations, students may work toward multiple math and literacy competencies based on their current learning needs.
For example, a student might be approaching mastery of one math competency, actively developing another, and beginning a new skill in a different area. Their literacy learning may look different, with strengths and needs across reading, writing, vocabulary, or foundational reading skills.
Foundations blocks are organized around these current competencies so students receive targeted instruction, guided and independent practice, support, and appropriate challenge.
As students demonstrate mastery of individual competencies, they can continue forward in that area while still developing other skills. Their entire learning experience does not have to move at one pace.
Progress is monitored throughout each unit and reviewed more broadly at the end of every unit so learning plans and flexible groups can be adjusted based on what students are ready to learn next.
The goal isn’t for every student to be in the same place. The goal is for every student to keep growing from where they are.
A learning group is not a label.
Students are complex learners. A child may demonstrate advanced understanding in one area while needing additional time, practice, or support in another.
For that reason, Foundations groups are designed to be flexible and responsive rather than permanent placements.
A student may work with one group for a particular math competency and another group for a different skill. As students demonstrate new understanding, their instructional needs and groupings can change.
This allows us to look beyond broad labels such as “ahead” or “behind” and ask a more useful question:
What does this student understand now, and what are they ready to learn next?
Strong math and literacy skills give students the tools to do much more than math and literacy.
They allow students to read to discover, write to communicate, calculate to solve problems, research questions, analyze information, explain ideas, design solutions, and participate more fully in authentic learning experiences.
That is why Foundations and PEAK Mastery’s broader learning experiences are designed to complement one another.
Students build essential skills in Foundations and then have opportunities to use those skills for meaningful purposes throughout their learning.

Foundational learning is about more than completing an assignment or remembering a procedure long enough for a test. We want students to understand what they are doing, why it works, and how to use their learning in new situations.
Mastery Over Memorization
We focus on true mastery, helping students understand the “why” behind what they learn.
Practice matters, but practice has a purpose. Students have opportunities to revisit ideas, learn from feedback, correct misunderstandings, and demonstrate that they can apply important skills independently.
Confidence Through Growth
When learning is appropriately challenging and students can see their own progress, they begin to recognize that ability can grow.
Experiencing challenge, receiving support, practicing, and eventually succeeding helps students build confidence, independence, persistence, and a willingness to take on increasingly complex learning.

Because academic skills build upon one another, misunderstandings can become more difficult to overcome when they go unnoticed. By identifying current learning needs and responding intentionally, Foundations helps students strengthen essential skills before moving into learning that depends upon them.

Students work toward clearly defined competencies and use evidence of learning to understand their progress. When mastery is demonstrated, students continue forward while receiving additional time and support in areas still developing.

Reading, writing, and math become tools students can use to investigate questions, conduct research, analyze information, solve problems, communicate ideas, design solutions, and participate in authentic learning experiences.
Coaching Relationships

Educators help students understand their progress, recognize strengths and challenges, set meaningful goals, and develop greater ownership of their learning. Relationships help ensure that personalization is about knowing the whole learner, not simply tracking a score.
