If you have more than one child, you probably already know how differently two kids can learn.
One reads independently at an early age and needs years to feel comfortable with multiplication. Another flies through math and would happily avoid writing a paragraph for the rest of their life.
Even within one child, learning rarely happens at the same speed in every subject.
That creates an interesting question for schools:
How do we keep clear academic expectations while responding to what individual students understand right now?
At PEAK Mastery, mastery-based learning is one part of our answer.
The word mastery is right there in our name, so it is worth being clear about what we mean by it.
PEAK Mastery students would work toward clearly defined competencies aligned with the Utah Core Standards. Teachers would gather evidence from assessments, student work, projects, observations, portfolios, and other demonstrations of learning to understand a student's progress.
That information helps answer practical questions.
What does this student understand?
Where are they getting stuck?
What needs another explanation or another opportunity to practice?
Where are they ready for a greater challenge?
Research on mastery learning has found positive effects when students receive clear learning objectives, feedback, corrective instruction, and additional opportunities to demonstrate understanding.¹ ² Research on formative assessment also supports using evidence of student learning to inform what happens next in instruction.³
At PEAK Mastery, that means progress is something students, educators, and families should be able to see and talk about.
Sometimes a child is almost there.
Maybe they understand multiplication but are struggling to apply it in a new kind of problem. Maybe they can decode individual words but lose meaning when a passage becomes more complicated. Maybe their writing has great ideas, but organizing those ideas is still difficult.
Those situations give teachers useful information.
In PEAK Mastery's proposed model, a student who has not yet demonstrated a competency can receive additional instruction, practice, feedback, or another opportunity to show what they understand.
The response will depend on the student and the skill.
That might mean working with a Foundations teacher in a small group, receiving targeted intervention, trying a different explanation, practicing independently, or working with a coach to identify what is getting in the way.
Mastery learning research supports this cycle of instruction, feedback, corrective support, and additional opportunities to learn.¹ ²
The important word here is yet.
A student can understand where they are in the learning process and what they need to work on next.
Personalization also includes noticing when a student is ready for additional challenge.
That does not always mean racing ahead to the next grade level.
Sometimes greater challenge means applying a familiar concept to a harder problem. It might mean explaining an idea, making connections across subjects, investigating a question more deeply, or using a skill in a new situation.
Research on learning and transfer suggests that deeper understanding includes being able to recognize when knowledge is relevant and apply it across different contexts.⁴
PEAK Mastery's Wonder Workshops and Extended Learning Experiences can create opportunities for that kind of application.
A student who understands the mathematics behind ratios might use it while designing something.
A strong reader might compare sources while investigating a historical question.
A student who understands an ecosystem on paper might encounter a much more complicated version of it during fieldwork.
Knowing something is valuable.
Knowing what to do with it opens another layer of learning.
Personalized learning can sound like every student sitting alone with an entirely different curriculum.
That is not how PEAK Mastery's current model is designed.
Students remain part of a learning community while educators use flexible grouping, assessment evidence, coaching, intervention, enrichment, and competency tracking to respond to individual progress.
During Foundations instruction, students may work in flexible groups based on current learning needs. Those groups can change as students progress.
During Wonder Workshops, students can apply knowledge through interdisciplinary projects and questions.
During Extended Learning Experiences, students may have opportunities for personalized learning, additional support, enrichment, fieldwork, community learning, or other experiences connected to their goals.
And throughout that process, coaches help students and families understand the larger picture of the student's progress.
Personalization at PEAK Mastery is about using what we know about a student's learning to make thoughtful instructional decisions.
The four PEAK values help explain how this approach extends across the school model.
P: Personalized
Students bring different strengths, needs, interests, and prior knowledge to their learning. Assessment and competency evidence help educators decide where support, practice, or greater challenge may be appropriate.
E: Expeditionary
Understanding grows when students have opportunities to use knowledge in meaningful contexts. Wonder Workshops, fieldwork, projects, and Extended Learning Experiences give students opportunities to connect academic learning with larger questions and experiences.⁴
A: Agency
Students can gradually become more involved in understanding their own progress. Research on self-regulated learning describes skills such as setting goals, monitoring progress, selecting strategies, and reflecting on results.⁵
At PEAK Mastery, portfolios, coaching conversations, goal setting, competency tracking, and student-led conferences give students opportunities to practice those skills.
K: Kinship
Knowing a student over time can give an educator valuable context for understanding progress. Research has found connections between positive teacher-student relationships, student engagement, and academic achievement.⁶
PEAK Mastery's multi-year coaching model is designed to give those relationships time to develop.
This is an important question, especially for parents considering a mastery-based school.
PEAK Mastery is still a public school. Students would learn the Utah Core Standards, participate in required state assessments, and have their academic progress monitored.
Mastery-based progression gives educators another layer of information within that structure.
A student's age or enrolled grade still matters. So does the evidence of what that particular student understands.
PEAK Mastery's current design uses competency maps, assessment data, portfolios, and educator judgment to build a clearer picture of progress across time.
For families, that can make conversations about learning more specific.
Instead of only asking, How is my child doing in math?, a parent can begin asking:
What have they mastered?
Where are they still developing?
What are they working toward next?
Those are questions we want families to be able to answer.
Some concepts click quickly.
Others take five explanations, three mistakes, a conversation, a night's sleep, and one final example that suddenly makes the whole thing make sense.
Children will encounter both.
PEAK Mastery's mastery-based model is designed to give educators useful information about those moments and options for responding to them through instruction, feedback, flexible grouping, intervention, enrichment, and additional opportunities to demonstrate learning.
Students still have clear academic expectations. They still encounter challenging material. They still have deadlines, responsibilities, and standards to meet.
They also have opportunities to understand where they are, what they are working toward, and what comes next.
That is the kind of progress we want learning to make visible.
PEAK Mastery is currently working through Utah's charter approval process as we develop another tuition-free public school option for Cache Valley families.
