A child can be an extraordinary reader and need extra help with math.
They can have a remarkable memory and struggle to organize a writing assignment.
They can understand complicated ideas and still need support with a foundational skill everyone assumes they already know.
They can be ready for greater challenge in one subject and additional practice in another.
A single label like ahead or behind does not tell us very much about that child.
For parents, those labels can carry a lot of weight. If you hear that your child is “behind,” you probably want to know something much more useful:
Behind in what? What do they understand now? What are they working toward? What kind of support would help?
Those are the questions PEAK Mastery’s proposed learning model is designed to ask.
Schools need ways to measure academic progress. PEAK Mastery will, too.
As a proposed Utah public charter school, PEAK Mastery would participate in required state assessments and accountability measures. The school also plans to use ongoing assessments, student work, projects, portfolios, observations, competency demonstrations, and other evidence to understand student progress.
Each source of information can tell educators something.
A reading assessment might reveal that a student needs support with decoding. A writing sample might show sophisticated ideas alongside difficulty organizing them. A math assessment might uncover one missing foundational skill while showing strong reasoning elsewhere.
That level of specificity matters.
Research on formative assessment supports using evidence of student understanding to identify where learners are and inform subsequent instruction.¹
Instead of stopping at a broad label, educators can ask a more useful question:
What does this student need next?
Imagine a student who is having difficulty with fractions.
That does not tell us the whole story.
Maybe they need more practice recognizing equivalent fractions. Maybe multiplication facts are taking so much mental effort that a multistep problem becomes overwhelming. Maybe they understand the concept when working with objects or drawings and are still learning to connect that understanding to numerical notation.
Those situations may call for different responses.
PEAK Mastery’s current model includes flexible instructional groupings, Foundations instruction, ongoing progress monitoring, targeted intervention, coaching, and Extended Learning Experiences that can provide additional opportunities for academic support.
Flexible groups are especially important here. A student may work with one group for a particular skill and a different group as their needs change.
The grouping responds to the learning need being addressed.
It does not define the child.
Children can surprise us with how uneven their learning is.
A student who needs substantial support in one area may be remarkably advanced in another. Even within the same subject, a child may have a mixture of strengths and gaps.
That is why personalization also includes recognizing when a student is ready for more.
PEAK Mastery’s current model includes opportunities for enrichment and additional academic challenge alongside intervention and support. The proposal describes flexible instructional groupings and personalized pathways that respond to readiness and growth.
Greater challenge can take different forms.
A student might work with more complex material. They might apply a familiar skill to a harder problem, investigate a question more deeply, take on greater responsibility within a project, or make connections across subjects.
The useful question remains the same:
What does this student need next?
Sometimes the answer is support.
Sometimes it is challenge.
Sometimes it is both.
Imagine two conversations about your child.
The first is:
“Your child is below grade level in reading.”
That information matters, but you probably have several questions immediately.
Now imagine hearing:
“Your child understands what they read when a text is read aloud and has strong vocabulary. Right now, decoding unfamiliar words is making independent reading difficult. Here is the skill we are working on, here is the support they are receiving, and here is how we will monitor their progress.”
Now you have something you can understand.
PEAK Mastery’s proposed competency maps, “I Can” statements, portfolios, mastery checks, assessments, and progress monitoring are designed to make academic progress more visible over time. The current model also includes Student Success Plans and additional intervention when students need more intensive support.
For families, the goal is to make conversations about learning specific enough to be useful.
Personalized learning still comes with clear academic expectations.
PEAK Mastery students would work toward competencies aligned with the Utah Core Standards. Students would also participate in required state assessments and PEAK Mastery’s systems for progress monitoring and competency verification.
Grade-level information remains important because it helps educators and families understand how a student is progressing relative to academic expectations.
PEAK Mastery’s mastery-based model adds another layer to that information.
A teacher can look at the grade-level expectation and the individual student’s evidence of learning, then decide what instruction, practice, intervention, enrichment, or challenge is appropriate.
Research on mastery learning supports approaches that use clear objectives, feedback, corrective instruction, and additional opportunities to learn.² ³
Personalization becomes a way of helping students make meaningful progress toward clear expectations.
Children listen closely to how adults talk about their abilities.
Research on motivation and beliefs about intelligence suggests that the messages students receive about ability, effort, strategies, and improvement can influence how they respond to academic challenges.⁴
That does not mean we need to pretend a child is doing well in an area where they are struggling.
Children deserve accurate information about their learning.
A student can know:
This is difficult for me right now.
I haven't mastered this skill yet.
I need help.
I'm making progress.
I'm really strong in this area.
I'm ready for something harder.
Those statements give a child information they can use.
PEAK Mastery’s coaching, goal setting, portfolios, competency maps, reflection, and student-led conferences are designed to help students become increasingly aware of their own strengths, needs, progress, and next steps.
“Different” is a broad word.
In a classroom, it can mean a hundred things.
A student may need more repetition. More challenge. A different explanation. Explicit instruction. Time to practice. Help organizing a task. A chance to talk through an idea. A quieter place to concentrate. A more complex problem. Support from a specialist.
Good information helps educators get more specific.
PEAK Mastery’s proposed model uses assessment, flexible grouping, mastery-based progression, intervention, enrichment, coaching, and ongoing progress monitoring to respond to what that information shows.
For a parent worried that their child is “behind,” that specificity can make the conversation much more useful.
We can talk about what the child knows today.
We can identify what they are working toward.
And we can make a plan for what comes next.
PEAK Mastery is currently working through Utah’s charter approval process as we develop another tuition-free public school option for Cache Valley families.
